Unprocessed GA21 Corn Approved for Import in the EU

The European Commission has allowed the import of unprocessed genetically modified maize (GA21) for feed and food use in the European Union. The decision was made by the Commission after the Council of Agricultural Ministers failed to establish a qualified majority against the market placement of the genetically modified maize in February. Studies conducted by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) showed that GA21 poses no risks to human and animal health as well as to the environment. The Commission now hopes that the import license will help alleviate the economic situation of European pork producers, currently suffering from a combination of high feed costs and low meat prices.
