Limited Release of GM Wheat Tolerant to Abiotic Stress

April 4, 2008

Australia’s Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) has received an application from the University of Adelaide for the limited and controlled release of thirty barley and wheat lines genetically modified for enhanced tolerance to environmental stressors like high boron levels in the soil and low water availability. Several lines were modified for increased production of beta-glucan (increased dietary fiber). The release is proposed to take place in the shire of Marion, South Australia on a total area of up to 400 m2 between 2008 and 2009. OGTR has prepared a Risk Assessment and Risk Management Plan which concludes that the wheat and barley lines pose no risks to human health or the environment.
