Filipino Biotech Researchers Train on IP Management

Leaders and researchers of biotech projects supported by the Department of Agriculture-Biotechnology Program Office (DA-BPO) were updated on Intellectual Property (IP) and its integration in the research and development process during the IP Management Training-Workshop held on August 19-21, 2015 at Acacia Hotel Manila.

ISAAA Senior Program Officer Dr. Rhodora R. Aldemita highlighted in her opening message the importance of having and protecting technologies by Filipino scientists through local IPs, and its contribution to the Philippine economy. Resource persons from the Department of Science and Technology, the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice), and UPLB introduced the Philippine IP system and Technology Transfer Act. They elaborated on the different types of IPs (patents, utility model, trademarks, etc.), prior art search, IP disclosure, claim drafting, and IP valuation. The modes of technology transfer and IP licensing of innovations in the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) were also discussed.

The 40-some participants  were from UPLB, PhilRice, University of Southern Mindanao, Visayas State University, Philippine Carabao Center, and National Fisheries Research and Development Institute. The workshop was organized by ISAAA, the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture – Biotechnology Information Center (SEARCA BIC), and DA-BPO.
