Pro-biotech Moms Address Celebrity GMO Activists

August 26, 2015

Mothers advocating for biotechnology released a letter to celebrities who are against biotechnology to encourage them to reassess their support for mandatory labeling of GM products. According to the mothers advocating for biotech, known as "Moms4GMOs", they acknowledge that the celebrity mothers' concerns on GMOs are based on their love and concern for their children. Moms4GMOs share the same feelings for their children, thus, they feel that they have the responsibility to clarify misconceptions on biotechnology, based on their scientific knowledge.

The letter was signed by scientists Dr. Alison Van Eenennaam, Dr. Anastasia Bodnar, and Dr. Alison Berstein; Julie Borlaug, Associate Director of Normal Borlaug Institute and granddaughter of Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Dr. Norman Borlaug; together with writers, nurses, teachers, and farmers.

"You say you have the 'right to know what's in our food'. Labeling whether a product contains ingredients derived from a GMO crop tells you nothing about what is 'in' the food. Genetic engineering is a breeding method, not a product. It isn't an ingredient to scoop into a bowl. For example, sugar from GMO sugar beets is just sucrose, there is nothing 'in' it. It is just like sugar from sugarcane," the letter said.
