USDA FAS Releases GAIN Agri-biotech Report for Croatia

July 15, 2015

The USDA Foreign Agricultural Service released the Global Agricultural Information Network (GAIN) Report on the status of agricultural biotechnology in Croatia.

According to the report, Croatia is a net food importer and its government policies focus on improving agricultural productivity and, to a lesser extent, control imports. Although the country has adopted the European Union's biotech legislation, it continues to implement stringent national biotech policies. Croatia holds on to high quality "natural" products as a competitive advantage in the field of agriculture. This scenario leads to a concern about the potential market consequences of adopting pro-biotech policies as well as strong bias against GM products as somehow being "unnatural". Croatian policy makers and the general public need to be more informed about biotechnology because they still perceive GM products as potentially dangerous.
