October 1, 2014

A book highlighting Chinese President Xi Jinping's important remarks on governance from 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China has been published by the Central Committee Documents Publishing House on September 25, 2014.

A number of previously unpublished documents from President Xi are featured which includes a talk during the Central Rural Work Conference. In this speech, he recalled the hungry experience in his youth, and talked about his views on the issue of GM. Xi said, "I emphasize two points, first, to ensure safety, the second is to encourage innovation. The GM industrialization should strictly follow the technical standards and regulations formulated by the state. China needs occupied the commanding heights of GM technology. Transgenic agricultural market can not be occupied by foreign companies." The foundation of food security is still unstable. We will be passive in the long-term once food security problems occur. Our bowl must be firmly in our own hands. Food security initiative must be firmly grasped in our own hands."
