Farmers Need to Use Latest Technologies to Increase Yield

Farmer's community needs to apply and promote the latest technologies in agriculture including biotechnology  to increase productivity and meet the demands of increasing population and depletion of natural resources. This was highlighted by Food Security Secretary Mr. Seerat Asghar and CIMMYT Director General Dr. Thomas Lumpkin at the concluding ceremony of Farmer Convention organized by the University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF), on 24-27 October 2013.  Dr. Lumpkin further added that CIMMYT is working with Pakistan in the last 50 years and now they are working on hybrid wheat that will help increase yield of wheat in manifold. Mr. Asghar said that the world has food shortage because of climate change so we have to take actions such as boosting up per acre production.

UAF Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Iqrar Ahmad Khan said that the world has to promote genetically modified crops especially in developing countries to alleviate hunger. He suggested that farmers need to use the dual trait crops in the field to raise productivity. He added that the country is importing pulses and palm oil worth 3.5 billion. MNA Mr. Muhammad Afzal underscored the key role farmers play in the development of the agricultural sector. He praised the UAF festival which brought the scientists and farmers together and unite their expertise for the benefit of all. The UAF also distributed seeds of different crops among the participants.
