Report Shows Spain Continues Expansion of GE Corn Plantings

October 30, 2013

The recent Global Information Network (GAIN) Report released by the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service provided information that Spain remains the leading producer of genetically engineered (GE) corn in the European Union (EU). The report highlights show that Spain continues expansion of GE corn plantings, and together with Portugal account for more than 90 percent of the total EU-28 area planted to MON810. The area planted to GE corn in Spain in 2013 grew by 17 percent compared to the previous year offsetting the 12 percent decline registered in Portugal. The report also cited that farmers remain most interested in approval to cultivate herbicide tolerant and drought resistant crop varieties.
