NABDA DG: Biotechnology Key to Addressing Global Food Insecurity

Professor Solomon Bamidele, director general of Nigeria's National Agricultural Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA), said that conventional agriculture cannot address global food insecurity if application of biotechnology is not given attention. Speaking in Abuja during an international conference and annual general meeting of the Biotechnology Society of Nigeria, Professor Bamidele cited the Food and Agriculture's population projection of 9 billion by 2050. He added that "coupled with other challenges, such as global warming, depletion of water, decrease in arable land, conventional agriculture cannot do it alone."  He thus recommended the intervention of modern technologies like biotechnology to be able to meet up with these challenges.
