Tanzanian Scientist Calls for More Research in Agri-biotech

June 13, 2013

Tanzania's Presidential Science Laureate, Dr. Joseph Ndunguru of the Mikocheni Agricultural Research Institute, has called on the country to apply agricultural biotechnology to improve its food production capacity.

Dr. Ndunguru made this clarion call at a recent public lecture on 27th May at the University of Dar-es-Salaam. He encouraged young graduates and aspiring researchers to embrace agricultural biotech because Tanzania stands to gain a great deal from this scientific field.

"Modern agricultural biotechnology holds considerable promise to meet the challenges in agricultural production. Cutting edge science is possible in Tanzania and I believe that we have the present and future capacity as a country because in addition to the biotech scientists currently working in the country, we are also training Masters and PhD students." He noted.

Citing the progress made by his team in tackling Cassava Mosaic Disease (CMD) and Cassava Brown Streak Disease (CBSD), Dr. Ndunguru expressed firm belief that the answer to Tanzania's food production challenges lay in agricultural biotechnology.
