EFSA: GM Maize 59122 is Safe for Food and Feed Uses

April 3, 2013

The European Food Safety Authority released a scientific opinion on the risk assessment for the commercial release of genetically modified maize 59122 for food and feed uses and cultivation. According to EFSA GMO Panel, the GM crop is unlikely to have any adverse effect on the environment, except for possible evolution of resistance to Bt proteins in target pests. Thus, the Panel recommends execution of proper insect resistance management strategies and case-specific monitoring. The Panel also declared the crop to be as safe as its conventional counterpart and commercial maize varieties in terms of possible adverse effects on human and animal health.
