Biotech Has No Health and Environmental Hazards, Says Expert

August 10, 2012

At a recent conference in Accra, Ghana, biotechnology expert Professor Jonathan Padi Tetteh said that genetically modified (GM) foods pose no health risks as extensive tests were conducted on them before they were released. Speaking at the monthly meeting of Open Forum on Agricultural Biotechnology in Africa (OFAB) on the theme "Impact of biotechnology on food production," Professor Tetteh noted that GM foods had been consumed in many countries including the United States of America, Canada, Brazil, India and China for over 16 years without reports of any adverse effects. He also pointed out that Bacillus thuringiensis, is toxic to insects only, but not to man, and other animals.

Professor Tetteh also called on experts and the media to provide the public with credible information on biotechnology to avoid misinterpretation.
